Four photogenic worlds in one expedition: the arid Atacama with its salt flats and flamingos, colorful Valparaíso, the waterfalls of Huerquehue National Park, and the granite towers of Torres del Paine in Patagonian light.
The Atacama is the most photographically intense desert I've been to. Sunrise over the altiplano lagoons with flamingos at four thousand meters, the El Tatio geysers in first light, Valle de la Luna with its eroded shapes carved by low sun, every day here starts before dawn and every sunset is worth setting up the tripod for.
Valparaíso works completely differently, street photography on the hillsides, colorful houses on steep staircases, the port, street art, layered compositions that almost build themselves. In Pucón and Huerquehue National Park I shift back to landscape: waterfalls with Villarrica volcano in the background, lakes in morning mist, light filtering through the araucaria canopy.
Torres del Paine are legendary in Patagonia for a good reason. Three granite towers in morning light, this is a shot you wait for with patience, because the Patagonian weather changes every hour. That unpredictability, storms, rainbows, and sharp light from behind clouds alternating in rapid succession, makes Patagonia one of the most rewarding places in the world for a photographer.
