Iceland Highlands

Iceland's Highlands are a world apart from the well-traveled Ring Road. Here, volcanic rhyolite mountains shift from rust to gold to deep purple across Landmannalaugar, black lava plains stretch toward Thórsmörk's glacial ridges, and the only sounds are wind and boiling geothermal vents. For a landscape photographer, this is as raw and extraordinary as it gets.

This is my ninth expedition to Iceland, and the Highlands route is one I've been building toward for years. We spend serious time at Kerlingarfjöll, where the combination of hot springs, colorful mountains, and changing northern light creates photographic opportunities you simply cannot replicate anywhere else in the world.

The physical demands here are higher than a typical Ring Road tour, but the payoff is proportional. We access locations where most tourist groups never reach, which means you work with unspoiled foregrounds, empty compositions, and the kind of solitude that lets you truly slow down and find your frame.
