Tuscany does something to the light that I've rarely seen elsewhere, especially in Val d'Orcia, where fog rolls through the cypress-lined ridges at dawn, turning the whole scene into a soft, layered painting. I always plan to be on a hilltop before sunrise here, because those first twenty minutes are everything.
The medieval towns, Pitigliano, San Quirico d'Orcia, Pienza, Siena, offer a completely different type of shooting. Narrow lanes, ancient stone, cathedral facades, local market life. I work with wide and medium primes here, looking for frames within frames and the contrasts between dark doorways and bright cobblestone.
Florence is the grand finale. The Ponte Vecchio at blue hour, the view from Piazzale Michelangelo at sunset, the symmetry of the Duomo, these are scenes you've seen a thousand times, but they still stop you cold when you're there with a camera. The goal is to bring your own take on them.
