A 12-day Silk Road photo tour from the mud walls of Khiva to Samarkand's tiled domes and Tashkent's Soviet modernism, timed for sunrise and blue hour.
Uzbekistan is one of those rare places where almost every frame feels like a discovery. We travel west to east along the Silk Road, starting inside the walls of Khiva, where I take you up the Islam Khodja minaret and onto the ramparts for sunrise over Itchan Kala, then finish the day at the unfinished turquoise drum of Kalta Minor.
In Bukhara the light does most of the work: Po-i-Kalyan at sunrise and sunset, the covered trading domes, Lyabi-Hauz at dusk and the four little towers of Chor Minor before the city wakes up. Samarkand is the visual peak. We shoot Shah-i-Zinda at first light, come back to Registan for blue hour, and return once more at dawn when the square is still empty.
Between the monuments there is plenty of real life to photograph: an early livestock market near Urgench, ceramic and carpet workshops in Gijduvan, a silk paper mill outside Samarkand and the chaos of Chorsu bazaar. We end in Tashkent with its decorated metro stations, bold Soviet modernist buildings and a day up in the Tian Shan foothills, with Lightroom sessions along the way to turn twelve days of shooting into a finished portfolio.
