Zion

Zion National Park, Utah

Photograph the red Navajo sandstone towers and canyon light of Zion, with autumn cottonwoods lining the Virgin River and the otherworldly depths of The Narrows.

Zion Canyon in autumn is one of those places that makes you want to slow down and work carefully. The red and orange Navajo sandstone towers catch the early morning light in a way that's almost operatic, and the Virgin River winding through the canyon floor gives you a natural foreground for almost every angle. I plan around the golden hours, but the midday light bouncing off the canyon walls creates its own soft, warm quality.

The cottonwood trees along the river turn brilliant yellow against the red walls in October and November, and that color contrast alone is worth the trip. The Narrows is where Zion gets completely surreal, wading through the river with slot canyon walls rising hundreds of feet overhead, you're shooting up into narrow strips of sky and soft reflected light that's unlike anything else.
